Hey everyone! I thought I’d switch things up a little today, with an evening post 😛

Throughout the years, I’ve shared with you guys content on fashion, beauty, hair, travel, food, lifestyle – you name it – but nothing really about skincare.  That’s all about to change 🙂

I’ve had my fair share of acne battles since I was a teenager and although I haven’t documented my journey here in the past, I’m super excited to start sharing more about my skincare routine and road to healthier, smoother and brighter skin! From my previous posts, you must have gotten the memo that jazz has set the tone for the week, with different Safaricom International Jazz Festival concerts going on all week. I will be attending the German themed jazz concert tomorrow evening, of course there is the unmissable exclusive V.I.P concert on Friday and then the family show on Sunday! With such an exciting and eventful couple of days, radiant, clear and glowing skin is a must! This explains why today I’ll be sharing with you 5 tried, tested and beloved homemade face masks that help tighten and smooth out oily/acne-prone skin, in preparation for a big event.

This is one of my absolute faves for drying out any pimples and for overall smoother skin. Aspirin has Aminosalicylic Acid which is an ingredient found in many actual spot treatment creams. The citric acid in the juice of a lemon is fantastic to even out the skin tone and the honey is not only soothing, but has wonderful moisturizing properties for all skin types. (The skin benefits of honey are endless, which makes it such a popular ingredient for my face masks!) All you have to do is squeeze juice of a lemon onto 3-5 tablets of uncoated aspirin, add a little honey, mix and apply the mask over your face. Leave it on until it dries then rinse with warm water and moisturize.

I recently discovered this mask and I am so in love! Strawberries are a natural source of Salicylic acid which is found in most acne medicines, so this is definitely a holy grail for clear and radiant skin! All you need is about 3 big and ripe strawberries, a tablespoon of natural yogurt and a teaspoon of honey. Some people choose to blend these ingredients for a finer paste, but I prefer to just mix everything manually and then apply over my face. I leave it on for 20 minutes, rinse off with warm water and follow with my preferred moisturizer.

If you’re looking for a homemade remedy for excessively oily skin, then a Bentonite Clay mask may just be what you need. I find that it works so well to get rid of excess oil, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone with dry skin to use this mask without adding an oil to the ingredient mix. Moving on to our second ingredient, if you can get past the smell of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) then you can enjoy the benefits of reduced oiliness, tightened pores and brighter skin, without having to break the bank! 😀 For this mask, I mixed the clay, ACV and rose water (ratio of 1:3) and of course, some honey to moisturize my skin as the mask dries. Leave it on for 20 minutes, rinse with warm water and moisturize.

This is a super approach to target different needs for different areas on your skin, quick. I have some discoloring on my cheeks from old acne scars, so I used the Turmeric mask around that area, under my eyes and other darker areas of my face, to help brighten and rejuvenate. I was introduced to Sandalwood Powder by a colleague and the smooth and soft feeling it gives my skin goes unmatched. I actually have this colleague to thank for this particular mask combo! 😀 For my oily T- zone, I opted for my tried and true Carbonated Charcoal and Bentonite Clay mix. The former has amazing detoxifying properties and works amazingly to rid the skin of dirt and excess oil and of course you now know the benefits of Bentonite Clay 😛

PS: Because I’m sooo kind ( 😛 ), I’ll be giving away a pair of tickets for the Sunday show of the Safaricom International Jazz Festival, to one lucky winner! Stay tuned to my Instagram for deets!
